NEBOSH National General Certificate – National Sponsorship Scheme for Small
The National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health – NEBOSH – is the leading health and
safety awarding body in the UK. Its suite of qualifications, designed to meet a variety of needs among those
with professional responsibilities for health, safety and the environment, attracts some 21,000 candidates
each year.
Qualifications include Certificate and Diploma in Health and Safety, Certificate in Construction Safety,
Certificate in Fire Safety and Risk Management and Diploma in Environment Management.
NEBOSH is offering a new sponsorship scheme in partnership with its sponsor Birmingham Health, Safety
and Environment Association – BHSEA – allowing a candidate from a small company (less than 50
employees and not part of a larger group which employs more than 50 employees) to receive free training
for the award of the NEBOSH National General Certificate and the NEBOSH Construction Certificate. The
aim is to help improve standards of health, safety and welfare within the selected company, who would be
unable to fund such training themselves.
BHSEA is a registered Charity run by a group of voluntary members. Membership is open to
organisations/companies and individuals.
BHSEA are also involved in promoting health and safety ‘behind the scenes’ including, giving advice
particularly to smaller organisations and working with the HSE and other enforcing organisations. BHSEA is
a member of Safety Groups UK, an association that links similar groups across the UK and RoSPA.
BHSEA will cover the course provider fees and NEBOSH will cover the examination fee plus one re-sit if
required. Other costs that may be incurred (e.g. travel, accommodation, subsistence, books and materials)
would be the responsibility of the trainee, or his/her employer or organisation. Applications are to be sent to
BHSEA using the attached application form with a copy being sent to NEBOSH.
Organisations applying for a scholarship will be asked to assess how the completion of the NEBOSH
General Certificate by one of their workers will benefit the objectives of the organisation. They will also be
required to submit a copy of their most recent Annual General Report with their application.
NEBOSH, BHSEA, the nominated SME candidate and Organisation should make themselves available for
reasonable publicity and promotion including photographs for publication.
The award will be available only to organisations based in the area covered by the West Midlands
Government Office and the course providers are geographically spread across this region.
Course dates are sometimes specific to the training organisation. The scheme managers will do their best to
match organisations to their preferred location and course dates, but this cannot be guaranteed.
NEBOSH and BHSEA may store application details for up to four years to help with the management of the

results will be out by the end of the study period. Only completed and signed applications will be considered.
